Shawl with Beaded Edging
This shawl will keep you cozy and warm when you’re curled
up on the sofa but is also elegant enough to wear over a straight dress on cold
winter evenings. This pattern can be used with all types of soft wool, alpaca or
mohair yarn. Knitting with two different qualities of yarn makes an interesting
effect while the soft handle of the shawl comes from using a larger-than-usual
needle size. You can also make the shawl with several colors of leftover yarns.
Make sure you have enough of one color that can pull the other colors together.
Yarn and needles: For the grey shawl we
used a grey alpaca bouclé yarn called Pillpi (105m/50g) as yarn 1, and a grey
wool yarn, PT SPORT (128 m/50 g) as yarn 2 (both yarns from Rauma Wools) You
will need 2 balls of each yarn, and a long circular US size 9 / 5.5 mm.
For the white shawl we used white mohair from Drops Garnstudio called Vienna,
(95 m/50 g) as yarn 1 and Rauma Finullgarn (wool, 175 m/50 g) from Rauma Wools
as yarn 2. You will need 2 balls of the mohair, 1 ball of the Finullgarn, and a
long circular US size 10 ½ / 7 mm.
Beads: For the gray shawl we used 1 bag of small beads with a
silvery sheen, 4 mm, art no 570104 and 1 box of mixed glass beads, art no
701600, both from Panduro Hobby, but any beads you like can be used.
Notions: Heavy sewing thread and beading needle
Stitch technique: Knitting into front and back of a stitch (k1f&b): Knit
into the stitch as usual but do not slip old st off left needle. Insert right
needle into back of st on left needle and knit. Slip st off left needle.
Instructions: With circular needle and yarn 1 (gray alpaca bouclé for gray-brown
shawl or mohair for white shawl), cast on 3 sts.
A. Knit 1 into front and then back of stitch (= k1f&b – see explanation above),
yo, knit the center st, yo, k1f&b into last stitch. Do not turn. With right side
facing you, slide the sts back to front of needle. Knit across with wool (yarn
2); turn work.
B. With yarn 1, k1f&b into first st, k2, yo, knit center st, yo, k2, and k1f&b
into last st. Do not turn; slide sts back to front of needle and knit across
with yarn 2; turn.
C. Mark the center st with a locking ring marker or contrast color yarn. On rows
with yarn 1, increase with yo before and after center st and with k1f&b into
first and last sts of row. On rows with yarn 2, knit across. Always knit with
yarn 1 and then yarn 2 before turning work, as described above.
Continue as set until shawl is 19 ¾ in / 50 cm long, measured down center
stitch. Now increase at the beginning and end of every row but increase at the
center st only on rows with yarn 1. Work until shawl measures 25 ½ in / 65 cm
down center stitch. Bind off loosely with yarn 1.
Finishing: Weave in all tails neatly on WS. Wash the shawl by hand in lukewarm
water with woolwash. Gently squeeze out water and roll shawl in a towel to
absorb excess water. Pat out into shape and let dry flat on a carpeted floor.
Sew the beads to edges: Sew with an overhand stitch, sliding a bead onto needle
for each stitch. Between each bead, make a few small stitches without a bead so
that the thread holds securely to the shawl. The shawl looks nicest with a large
bead at each tip and smaller ones spaced evenly between in a random order.

This shawl was knit on US size 10 ½ / 7 mm needles with a white mohair yarn for one color and white wool for the other. It was made exactly as for the gray shawl but, with the larger needles, it knitted up much more quickly
